Summary
A rosewood, tulipwood, kingwood, mahogany and cube parquetry writing table, French, circa 1770, by Cardin, with gilt metal mounts, the shaped rectangular top inset with red velvet, above a pull-out slide and three frieze drawers, on cabriole legs headed with foliate rocaille mounts trailing to sabots, stamped indistinctly three times to the underside CARDIN JME, inventory label in drawer '305'.
Full description
The maker's stamp is often accompanied by the initials ‘JME’, as in this instance, which stands for Jurande Menuisiers Ebénistes, the cabinet-makers and joiners guild, further proof that the maker had been officially accepted into the guild.
