Oil painting on canvas, A Shooting Party at Ranton Abbey Staffordshire by Sir Francis Grant RA (Kilgraston 1803 - Melton Mowbray 1878), 1840. Full-length portraits of the Thomas William Anson, 1st Earl of Lichfield (1795-1854), mounted on a white pony, the Earl of Sefton, seated, the Earl of Uxbridge, later 2nd Earl of Anglesey, behind the bailiff or gamekeeper, James Gee (b. 1785), Viscount Melbourne and Thomas George Anson, Viscount Anson, later 2nd Earl of Lichfield (1825-1892) as a boy of about 15, seated on the ground in front, and keepers with dogs and game cart. Ranton Abbey was a Lichfield property in Staffordshire.
Provenance
Accepted by H.M. Treasury in lieu of estate duties following the death of Thomas Edward Anson (1883 – 1960) the 4th Earl of Lichfield and given on loan to The National Trust for display at Shugborough Hall in March 1966. Transferred as a gift to The National Trust by H.M. Treasury on the 30th October 1984.
