Summary
One of a pair of Chinese 'famille rose' rectangular inkstands, porcelain the rectangular stepped stand is fitted with a hinged cover to hold pens, and with a loose ink well and sander for sprinkling sand to dry the ink, along with a fixed octagonal candle holder. Painted in 'famille-rose' enamels with insects and flowering plants issuing from rockwork, within a band of gold scrollwork on iron-red outlines, the ends painted with puce monochrome landscapes, the inkwell and sander have a different pattern on each side with figures in interiors, birds on branches, puce monochromes and monochrome landscapes, China, Jingdezhen, decorated in Guangzhou (Canton), circa 1745.
