Summary
A snuffer tray, of silver, by John Cafe (d. 1757), silversmith and goldsmith of London, date-marked for 1751. An associated (and later) pair of wick trimmers/snuffers are NT 1257298.2. The tray of shaped rectangular form, with lipped and scalloped edge with six shell projections. With curving, scroll-ended upright handle, and sour scroll and scalloped feet. Scratch-marked weight '11.0' to underside. Engraved to the upper centre with a coat of arms, possibly the coat of arms of Bankes 'sable, a cross engrailed ermine between four fleurs-de-lys argent' .
Provenance
Bequest of the estates of Corfe Castle and Kingston Lacy made to the National Trust by Henry John Ralph Bankes (1902-1981). National Trust ownership commenced on 19 August 1982.
