Caption
Christ has been tied to a column, in the courtyard of Pontius Pilate’ s house, and will receive a flogging. This devotional, almost heavenly, rendering of Christ, rather than the brutal realism of the episode of the passion of Christ is typical of Spanish panting. Acquired by William Bankes (1786–1855) from the Convent of Atocha in Madrid in 1814.
