Summary
A brass inlaid turtle shell and ormolu mounted ebony and ebonised side cabinet, the doors French, early 18th century, the cabinet constructed at a later date, probably of English origin and created during the second half of the 19th century. The inverted breakfront of serpentine outline with four panneled doors mounted with ormolu plaques of putti, emblematic of the Arts. In lambrequin frame divided by fluted uprights mounted with female and bacchic masks. The plaques show; music, astronmy, painting and medicine. (This piece is possibly a combination of the four door panels attributed to Johann Puchwiser (1680-1744) and a later construction of English origin) The cabinet has been catalogued in the past as in the manner of Charles Cressent (Paris 1685–1768) this is incorrect.
Provenance
Bequest of the estates of Corfe Castle and Kingston Lacy made to the National Trust by Henry John Ralph Bankes (1902-1981). NT ownership commenced from 19th August 1982 By repute the side cabinet was in the London house in 1856 flanked by a pair of four-foot cabinets, forming a suite of three.
