Summary
Print, mezzotint, Henrietta Catherine Croft, Mrs Nathaniel Cholmley (d.1769) (after Sir Joshua Reynolds) by James Watson (Dublin 1740 – London 1790). Half-length seated to front, head turned in three-quarter profile to left, and resting on her right hand, her arm leaning on pedestal to left; wearing fur-trimmed dress with pearls around her neck. Possibly pair with KLA/D/1056. Daughter of Stephen Croft of Stillington, married in 1757 as his second wife, Nathaniel Cholmley of Whitby Abbey and Howsham. Based on the Reynolds three-quarter-length portrait of Mrs Cholmley with her son Hugh (1758-1769) but shown only to the waist and omitting the woody background and the child
