Summary
Enamel portrait miniature, Lord George Manners, later 7th Earl of Rutland (1580-1641) (after British (English) School) by Henry Bone, RA (Truro 1755 – Somers Town, London 1834).c.1821. Three-quarter length portrait, turned to left, facing spectator, with a reddish beard and high stiff lace collar and cuffs, wearing a black and white patterned jerkin, black trunkhose, his gloved left hand resting on his hip above his sword hilt, the knuckles of his right hand resting on a table to the left. Blue eyes, reddish hair, pale face. Crimson curtain background. Original in the collection at Hengrave Hall, Suffolk.
Provenance
The Bone-enamels at Kingston Lacy, copied from paintings in well-known houses, were mostly acquired by William Bankes at auction in 1836, from a set of 85 which had been unsuccessfully offered to the nation for £4000 by the elder Bone. William gave the bulk of them to his brother the Rev Edward Bankes. After William's flight abroad in 1841, Edward returned them to Kingston Lacy.
