Summary
Enamel portrait miniature, Robert Devereux, 2nd Earl of Essex (1566-1601) (after Marcus Gheeraerts the younger) by Henry Bone, RA (Truro 1755 – Somers Town, London 1834). 1800. Whole-length, standing, turned slightly to right facing spectator in a white doublet and hose, a large ruff and steel gorget, wearing the George of the Garter suspended from a blue ribbon. His right hand holds a baton his left hand grasps the hilt of his sword.. He wears black open shoes without rosettes. Brown eyes, dark brown hair, light brown beard, fresh complexion. Seascape background. After an original in the collection at Woburn.
Provenance
The Bone-enamels at Kingston Lacy, copied from paintings in well-known houses, were mostly acquired by William Bankes at auction in 1836, from a set of 85 which had been unsuccessfully offered to the nation for £4000 by the elder Bone. William gave the bulk of them to his brother the Rev Edward Bankes. After William's flight abroad in 1841, Edward returned them to Kingston Lacy.
