Full description
The English actor-manager is wearing a tweed suit with high collar and tie and a monocle. Signed and dated: 'Sincerely yrs. William McEwan May 1894 S W Bancroft'. It is dedicated to William McEwan, Margaret Greville's father. Squire White Butterfield was an English actor-manager. He changed his name to Squire Bancroft by deed poll just before his marriage to Effie Wilton. The couple are considered to have instigated a new form of drama known as 'drawing room comedy' or 'cup and saucer drama', owing to the realism of their stage sets.
