Full description
Margaret Greveill, her lady's companion, fondly known as 'The Duchess' and two to the ship officers pose for a photograph on an upholstered bench in a functional area of the ship. The ladies are dressed to keep warm with fur collars. Margaret's magnificent pearl and diamond earrings can be seen. These were part of the royal bequest and are currently owned and worn by Lady Sarah Chatto. Margaret Greville left for Japan in February 1936 and was back by May. The Terukuni Maru was a Japanese ocean liner owned by Nippon Yusen Kaisha. She and her sister ship were specially designed for tropical conditions, with air conditioning and fresh air circulation systems. Their routing was from Japan through the Indian Ocean, Suez Canal and Mediterranean Sea. She provided accommodation for 121 1st Class passengers, 68 2nd Class passengers, and there was also room for 60 3rd class passengers. The ship and passengers were served by a crew of 177.
