Caption
An oval tortoiseshell snuff box with a shagreen lid bearing the cypher of King Edward VII in silver. The King was the guest of honour at Mrs Greville’s first house party in 1909. According to a note inside the box it was given to Mrs Greville that same year. Edward VII is said to have commented that Mrs Greville’s ‘gift for hospitality’ amounted to a ‘positive genius’.

Provenance
A Gift from Edward VII to Mrs Greville in 1909. It was part of the collection at Polesden Lacey where it came into the care of the Trust as part of her bequest in 1942. The bequest of Margaret (Anderson) McEwan, The Hon. Mrs Ronald - later Dame Margaret - Henry Fulke Greville, DBE (1863-1942) from probate records linked with the donation of the property to the National Trust in 1943.
