Summary

A French terracotta bust of a young girl, head very slightly turned to left, the hair tied with a ribbon bearing a myrtle spray, the shoulders are covered by a dress with a lace collar. It is placed on a socle (a short plinth) made of 'fleur de peche' marble. The bust is signed 'par M (?) Julie Charpentier (?) le aout 1788' and is probably by Julie Charpentier (1770- 1845). Charpentier exhibited a bust of her sister at the Salon de la Correspondence in 1787. She also made works in stone and was the only woman to contribute bas-reliefs to Napoleon Bonaparte’s triumphal column at Palace Vendôme in Paris.

Provenance

Date of acquisition not recorded, but originally at 16 Charles Street, Mayfair, Mrs Greville's London home, and bequeathed by Margaret McEwan, The Hon. Mrs Ronald Greville (1863-1942) with Polesden Lacey, to the National Trust, in memory of her father, William McEwan (1827-1913) in 1942. This item found on the probate inventory record for Charles Street chattels at Polesden Lacey, found in the Dining Room, page 15.
