Summary
Mezzotint of Jane Bowles, after Joshua Reynolds, by Samuel Cousins titled 'Juvenile Amusement'.
Full description
Jane is dressed in a fanciful theatrical costume, she is kneeling and embracing her pet spaniel. A beam of sunlight shines through the foliage on the right hand side. The painting, which is now in the Wallace Collection, was first engraved by William Ward in 1798 with the title 'Juvenile Amusement'. Jane was the eldest daughter of Oldfield Bowles (1739-1810), an Oxfordshire land owner. Reynolds was invited to dinner by her family and played games with the children to gain Jane's confidence prior to the sitting. Payments for the painting were paid between 1775-1776; Jane was then 4 years old.
