Summary
One of sixteen Restoration Record Books created by Sheila Pettit, former Historic Buildings Representative for the National Trust. One of three books detailing the wallpaper schemes at Cragside. Book III, IV and V are all titled Wallpapers and correlate to one another. Book III begins with an Introduction by Sheila Pettit, contains fragments of historic wallpaper with blue stickers, these correspond to annotated plans of the House on the final pages of Book IV. Book IV also contains a list of rooms with corresponding numbers from the Cowtan pattern books. Book V contains watercolours by Zillah Pettit [Conservation Assistant at Cragside] of the pattern used in the decorative scheme during restoration. A scrapbook with red fabric covers and grey pages, with layers of protections between pages. Titled ‘part 2’, it details decorative schemes of ‘behind the scenes’ areas such as the House Offices, Administrator’s flat, Gilnockie flat and Servant’s Hall. The first page is a table of Cragside wallpapers by room, with old and new and a Book number, which refers to the Cowtan order books in the Victoria and Albert Museum. There are fragments of historic papers and samples of the papers used as a replacement during restoration work, as well as some photographs. Each sample has an Index number. The last page has an annotated map of the Ground floor, First floor, Second floor and Central tower. There is a number Key corresponding to where each wallpaper fragment was found or placed during restoration work. Drawings by Mauchlen, Weightman and Elphick, 1976.
