Summary
Tufted carpet with floral design on a red ground and fitted to the room. Thought to have been acquired for the Royal visit in 1884. A chenille carpet of deep pink wool pile ground with repeat palmette design. A border with a lime green ground and individual palmettes and pink flowers. Brown wool delineates the design throughout. The carpet was woven to shape to fit the length of the room into the end window bay. The borders were not cut and pieced with the main carpet but were woven to the specific shape of the room. The foundation of the carpet consists of a wool warp and wool weft with a supplementary ‘stuffer’ warp of jute. The chenille wool strand (forming the pile) is itself, woven with a cellulose (cotton) warp. The chenille strand is woven into the foundation of the carpet with a supplementary warp, called a cotton ‘catcher’ warp.
