William Armstrong was the son of a tenant farmer, who began his career as a clerk with a firm of corn merchants in Newcastle and rose to own the business. In 1850 he was made Lord Mayor of Newcastle. His son, William George Armstrong (1810–1900) became 1st Lord Armstrong of Cragside. The artist who painted this portrait and that of the sitter's wife, Anne Potter, may have been James Ramsay (1786–1854).
