This portrait of William Watson-Armstrong was painted in 1901, shortly after he inherited Cragside on the death of his great-uncle, Lord Armstrong (1810–1900), but before he was created Lord Armstrong of Bamburgh and Cragside in 1903. He is shown in the uniform of the Northumberland Hussars.
