Summary
Oil painting on canvas, William Armstrong (1778-1857), British (English) School, 19th century. A half-length portrait of William Armstrong, father of the 1st Lord Armstrong, wearing a dark coat and cravat. The son of a tenant farmer, William Armstrong began his career as a clerk with a firm of corn merchants in Newcastle and rose to own the business. In 1850 he was made Lord Mayor of Newcastle.
Provenance
Armstrong collection; transferred by the Treasury to The National Trust in 1977 via the National Land Fund, aided by 3rd Baron Armstrong of Bamburgh and Cragside (1919 - 1987).
