Summary
Institute of Archaeology 2008: Cardboard box (jewellers box) 13 plasticine impressions. Stuart Blaylock 2008: Box ix, jeweller’s box (unmarked) Containing plasticine seal impressions numbered on rear: 191 [8862]; F545-HARE [8863]; 189 [8864]; G61 [8865]; G21 [8866]; G147 [8867]; 124 [8868]; 168 [8869]; 197 , 198 [8870]; plus a further 3 in buff plasticine, all unnumbered [8871]. Nine out of eleven can be identified in the publication: G.21 G.61 Brak Mallowan 1947, pl. 14, no. 26. G.147 Brak Mallowan 1947, pl. 18, no. 15. F.545 Brak Mallowan 1947, pl. 13, no. 4; (hare: see text, p. 106). 3 G.124 Brak Mallowan 1947, pl. 20, no. 38. G.168 Brak Mallowan 1947, pl. 17, no. 14. (with tortoise). *The published catalogue records this number as G.188, but it is clearly marked 168 on the rear of the impression, presumably in error. G.189 Brak Mallowan 1947, pl. 17, no. 10. G.191 Brak Mallowan 1947, 120; pl. 17, no. 12. G.197 Brak Mallowan 1947, pl. 20, no. 10. G.198 Brak Mallowan 1947, pl. 20, no. 22. The remaining three plasticine impressions in the box are unnumbered,, but can be identified from published photographs as follows (see also photo 8871). Unnumbered (1 of 3) (top in photo 8871) is from F.514: Mallowan 1947, 109–10 and pl. 14, no. 20. Unnumbered (2 of 3) (centre in photo 8871) is from F.571: Mallowan 1947, 112 and pl. 14, no. 40. Unnumbered (3 of 3) (bottom in photo 8871) is from F.686: Mallowan 1947, 111 and pl. 14, no. 34. The two (out of eleven) are either not published, or are not identifiable (on the basis of the numbers given and comparison of the impressions with the published photographs of seal impressions. Since these (as well as the unidentified impressions from 122418, above) are uniform with the remainder of the impressions in plasticine, all of which come from Tell Brak, it is most likely that these, too, are from Brak and were simply not published (or have been overlooked in an admittedly brief and hasty trawl of the published seal impressions). They are certainly not from Chagar Bazar, from which relatively few seals are published.
