Summary

Oil painting on canvas, Robert Stewart, Viscount Castlereagh, 2nd Marquess of Londonderry, KG, GCH, MP (1769-1822), studio of Sir Thomas Lawrence PRA (Bristol 1769 – London 1830), circa 1814. A three-quarter-length portrait of Viscount Castlereagh, standing, facing the viewer, wearing a dark green coat with the ribbon and jewel of the Garter, a white waistcoat and stock, and fawn-coloured breeches. In his left hand he holds a bundle of papers, resting on a table. Behind him hangs a red drape, pulled to the right See also bust-length NT 1221350. The original version of the painting is in the Londonderry collection.

Provenance

Painted for the sitter and given by him to George Peter Holford, MP (1768–1839) of Westonbirt; Holford sale, Christie’s, 18 May, 1928, lot 109, bought by Seligman; Mrs George Rasmussen sale, Christie’s, 25 February, 1938, lot 710, bought by the 7th Marquess of Londonderry; thence by descent to his youngest daughter, Lady Mairi Bury (1921-2009) by whom given to the National Trust in 1976
