Summary
Oil painting on canvas, Hans Willem Bentinck, 1st Earl of Portland (1649-1709), by Dorofield Hardy (active 1882 – 1920), signed and dated 1914, after an original by Hyacinthe Rigaud of 1698. A three-quarter-length portrait of the 1st Earl of Portland, standing in a landscape, turned to the right, facing the viewer. He is wearing armour, with a blue sash over his shoulder and orange drapery tied around his waist. A long wig falls over his armour. He holds forward a baton in his right hand, and rests his left on a helmet.
Provenance
Given to Charles, 6th Marquess of Londonderry (1852-1915) by his wife, Theresa, Marchioness of Londonderry (1855 -1919), in 1914; thence by descent to Lady Mairi Bury (1921-2009) by whom given to the National Trust in 1976
