Summary
Oil painting on canvas, Hambletonian and Diamond by James Ward, RA (London 1769 - Cheshunt 1859), after George Stubbs, RA (Liverpool 1724 – London 1806), signed and dated 1819. Hambletonian and another horse, Mr Cookson's Diamond, are shown battling for the finish on the Beacon Course at Newmarket Heath. A lost sketch (oil or drawing) (possibly last recorded at 1853 Glenarm sale when bought by 'Street ' for five guineas although may have hung at Wynyard Park) by George Stubbs showing the two horses racing was exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1800 and could have been the model for this painting by Ward.
Provenance
Frances Anne, Marchioness of Londonderry (1800-1865) at Londonderry House, London; sale Christie's, London, on 9 July 1853, of "a small collection of pictures from Glenarm Castle, Ireland, the residence of the late Edmund Macdonald, Esq." bought back/in for Frances and hung at Wynyard Park (where the horse was buried); thence by descent, until transferred to the National Trust by Lady Mairi Bury (1921-2009) in 1976.
