Summary
Portrait miniature, watercolour on ivory, King Frederick VI, King of Denmark (1768-1839) (after (?) Friedrich Carl Gröger) by German or Danish School. c.1808-1810. Oval. Head and shoulders portrait of a man turned to the left, head turned to right gazing to right in red uniform, blue collar and facings, silver and gold epaulettes, black neckcloth, blue riband (over his left shoulder) and Star of the Order of the Elephant, and the cross of the Dannebrog Order. Blue eyes, fair hair and side whiskers. Plain grey background, darker to left. A framed set of nine miniatures of plenipotentiaries present at the Congress of Vienna. Each in individual pierced and engraved gilt metal frame and displayed on a shaped cushion covered in wine coloured velvet. An engraved silver gilt plate indicates their previous descent.
Provenance
These nine miniatures were presented to Count Fersen, Swedish Minister at the Court of Louis 18, and were purchased at a sale in Stockholm by Sir Audley Gosling and given to Lady Edwards of Plas Machynleth. Lady Edwards was the mother-in-law of the Fifth Marquess of Londonderry (biography) and thence by descent until gifted to the National Trust from the Estate of Lady Mairi Bury (1921-2009) 1976
