Summary
Portrait miniature, watercolour on ivory, King George III (1738–1820) (after Thomas Gainsborough) by Richard Collins (Gosport 1755 – London 1831). c.1808-1810. Oval. Head and shoulders portrait of a man facing head turned slightly to right looking to right, in Windsor uniform, blue riband (over his left shoulder) and star of Garter. Blue eyes, grey wig curled at sides. Plain beige background, darker to left. A framed set of nine miniatures of plenipotentiaries present at the Congress of Vienna. Each in individual pierced and engraved gilt metal frame and displayed on a shaped cushion covered in wine coloured velvet. An engraved silver gilt plate indicates their previous descent.
Provenance
These nine miniatures were presented to Count Fersen, Swedish Minister at the Court of Louis 18, and were purchased at a sale in Stockholm by Sir Audley Gosling and given to Lady Edwards of Plas Machynleth. Lady Edwards was the mother-in-law of the Fifth Marquess of Londonderry (biography) and thence by descent until given to the National Trust from Lady Mairi Bury (1921-2009) 1976
