Summary
A mahogany upright chair, British, late 18th century, with padded backrest above a padded seat with serpentine front rail, the shaped seat rail with egg and dart moulding, a foliate carved centre section (broken) and with scrolling foliate carved spandrels, the front seat rail carving echoed in the side rail carvings, the plain spandrels to the rear with flower motif stamp, on square-section front legs, the outward facing sides of the front legs shaped and the outer corner with egg and dart moulding down the length of the leg, with slightly splayed square-section rear legs, all legs mounted on brass and white ceramic castors, the castors stamped '[...] PATENT', the legs joined by a plain H-stretcher and the rear legs joined by a plain stretcher, the backrest upholstered with a gros-point needlework panel of flowers in a cartouche, surrounded by flowers and leaves on a red ground, the needlework panel surrounded with red cotton rep, the seat with gros-point needlework cover of flowers in a cartouche surrounded by flowers and leaves on a red ground, the sides of the seat in red cotton rep, the seat with twisted red trim to the seat and along the backrest top.
