Summary
Oil painting on canvas (oval), Lady Florence Sutherland-Leveson-Gower, Lady Florence Chaplin (d.1881) as a Child, British (English) School, circa 1860-65. An oval bust portrait of Lady Florence Sutherland-Leveson-Gower as a young girl, head-and-shoulders, turned slightly to the left, her head turned back to face the viewer, enveloped in clouds. Her long, blonde hair falls over her shoulders, and she wears a green ribbon with pink flowers in her hair. The oval is encircled by leaves, and is inscribed with her name at the bottom. The sitter was the daughter of the 3rd Duke of Sutherland, and was later the wife of Henry Chaplin, 1st Viscount Chaplin (1840-1923), and mother of Edith, Marchioness of Londonderry (1878-1959).
Provenance
On loan to the National Trust from Lady Mairi Bury (1921-2009) 1976, then accepted by HM Government in lieu of Inheritance Tax and allocated to the National Trust, 2013.
