Summary
Miniature, oil on ivory, Sir Henry Bedingfeld (1511-83), after Hans Holbein, possibly eighteenth century, after a lost sixteeenth-century original, shown half-length, his head turned three-quarter to his left, with a white beard, wearing a cap and a gown and holding a staff in his be-ringed right hand, against a blue background, inscribed 'Sir Henry Bedingfeld Kt. Govr. of ye. Tower 1555', in a rectangular gilded frame. The sitter was a supporter of Princes Mary Tudor (1516-58) and following her accession to the throne as Queen Mary I he was made Constable of the Tower of London. Bedingfeld oversaw the imprisonment of Princess Elizabeth (1533-1603) following Wyatt's rebellion in 1554. After Elizabeth's accession to the throne in 1558 Bedingfeld retired to Oxburgh Hall.

In the ownership of the Conyngham family, Marquesses Conyngham; purchased by the National Trust at the Slane Castle sale organised by Adam's, Dublin, 12-13 October 2014, lot 138.
