Bullet or stonebow (crossbow) by Green of Prescott, Lancs. c1770 -1800. Slender steel bow with recurved tips retaining double composite string cord with pocket for a bullet or stone. (Bow length 65.5cm) Slender wooden tiller (or stock) with engraved iron mounts (damaged), the forward end with a turned finial, the rear terminating with a mushroom shaped pommel. Enclosed and folding iron gaffle (for stretching the bowstring), incorporating firing release mechanism with button release; together with a folding peep-sight, engraved and signed on the back Green, Prescott. Folding 2-pronged fore-sight, The metal rusted overall. Some splits to the stock. Overall Length 78cm.
Provenance
Part of the Bedingfeld Collection. The house was given to the National Trust in 1952 by Sybil, Lady Bedingfeld (1883-1985), her daughter Mrs Greathead, and her niece Violet Hartcup.
