Full description
Flintlock musket (militia pattern) by Simpson, London c1760. The family name stamped into the butt indicates that it was part of the equipment for a local volunteer militia. Round barrel with turned moulding at the breech. Breech stamped with Tower of London proof marks for private arms (crossed sceptres and crown) and inscribed OXBURGH VOLs. Muzzle with bayonet lug. Retained to the stock by 3 barrel pins. Steel ramrod. Barrel length 99.5cm. Calibre 20mm. Walnut full stock with a hand-rail form butt. Carved apron to barrel tang. The owners name, BEDINGFELD, stamped into butt. Brass furniture comprising; butt-plate, trigger guard with sling swivel, flat sideplate, escutcheon, fore-end cap and 3 ramrod pipes. Flintlock with round plate with linear engraving. Engraved under the pan with the Royal Cypher, G under a crown and on the tail of the plate with the makers name, SIMPSON. Overall length: 140cm.
