Summary
A walnut and oak hall chair or sgabello, Italian, part mid 17th century the back carved with the winged head of an angel above a heart shaped pierced motif and a figure holding a spear and some feathers amongst grape vines with an armorial shield below, the dished seat with canted front corners raised on a solid front support carved as a cartouche. The front support replaced, probably circa 1850. For another hall chair at Oxburgh Hall with a near identicle back see NT1209861 which has its original front support, although this chair is made from chestnut they are both almost certainly by the same hand. Purchased at the sale of the Bryan Hall Collection in 2004 by the National Trust.
