Summary
Seated figure, Dehua, China, 18th century. Hollow-moulded figure of a figure, possibly a bodhisattva seated in the lotus position, on a moulded base. Hands pressed together in prayer. Figure wears flowing robes and a low head-dress. Sitting on lotus flower base. Damage to top of headress and shoulders, left big toe is missing. Style sometimes known as blanc du Chine in Europe. Blanc de Chine is the name given to white porcelains made in Dehua, China, and in the eighteenth century, the popularity of blanc de Chine inspired European potters to develop their own hard-paste white porcelain (made from compound minerals and fired at very high temperatures), copying prototypes imported from China.
