Summary
Oil painting on canvas, Anthony Hicks (1916-2005), in a sun-hat, by Alexandra Drysdale (b. 1962), signed bottom right: AMD 1987. A portrait of the second husband of Agatha Christie's only child and daughter, Rosalind Hicks (1919 - 2004) in straw hat and blue shirt. The artist's grandparents, Sir Julian and Lady Gascoigne, were friends of Agatha and Max Mallowan, and of Rosalind and Anthony Hicks. In around 1987 Hicks commissioned Alexandra Drysdale to paint NT 120801, a portrait of the sitter wearing a sunhat. Soon after the artist then painted NT 119672, to convey 'a melancholy aspect to Anthony’s personality' (information supplied by Alexandra Drysdale, 2024).
