Summary
An ash, cherry and birch open armchair, North West England, circa 1780. The back with solid vase-shaped splat and shaped toprail, the accentuated scroll-shaped arms on baluster supports, the rush seat with turned front legs and octagonal back legs joined by multiple stretchers, remains of green paint to seat.
Full description
The attribution to the North West of England is based on the combination of several features, including the (painted) rush seat, the vase splat, the profile of the front stretcher and the octagonal (or chamfered) back legs, all of which appear in chairs from the North West region. See Cotton 'The English Regional Chair', ACC 1990, Fig NW15 for a chair with similar back.
