Summary
A carved walnut 'Bambocci' cabinet or 'Stipo a Bambocci', North Italian, Genoa, circa 1630. Displaying a variety of cherubs and figures, the fall-front enclosing a fitted interior of four small drawers and one long drawer around a central cupboards, further drawers within, including secret drawers, on a projecting plinth, probably originally with a stand or cupboard base, the side of one drawer beautifully inscribed in ink DANTE ALIGHIERI DIMORO IN RAVENNA DALL' ANNO 1314 SINO ALL' ANNO 1321 NEL QUALE MORI with a drawing of Dante's head in profile, the back of the same drawer inscribed ARCHIVIO, also the number 273 is chalked to the inside of the door. The translation is ‘Dante Alighieri lived in Ravenna from 1314 until his death in 1321’.
