Summary
Tempera painting, Five People in a Canoe, by an unknown artist, 19th century. At right, a painted wooden canoe rowed by five people who may be indigenous to the Pacific Northwest. The canoe paddles to the left, past a small verdant island trailed by rocky outcrops on the horizon. At left there is a ship with sails and gulls fly throughout. The canoe, people, ship, island and rocks are reflected in the surface of the water. The sky is pink and yellow, indicating an early morning.
