Summary
Billiard table by Gillows, Gillows ID number 1086, dating from the 1830s. Slate-bedded mahogany frame on eight turned baluster legs.
Provenance
The original billiard table at Speke Hall was given away by Adelaide Watt (1857-1921), 'for use of wounded soldiers in Hospital.' This particular table may be, or is very similar to, that table. The table was given to the National Trust in 2007 by Garston Park Methodist / United Reformed Church, which is believed to have received it earlier in the 20th century from another local institution which acquired it directly or indirectly from a local 'big' house. The table dates from the mid 1830s, and is likely to have been purchased second-hand by either Richard Watt V (1835-65) or Frederick Leyland, tenant of the Hall, 1867-77.
