Oil painting on canvas, Anthony Hicks (1916-2005), by Alexandra Drysdale (b. 1962), signed bottom right AMD, circa 1987. A head and shoulders portrait of the second husband of Agatha's only child and daughter, Rosalind Hicks (1919 - 2004) whom he married in 1949. ‘The artist's grandparents, Sir Julian and Lady Gascoigne, were friends of Agatha and Max Mallowan, and of Rosalind and Anthony Hicks. In around 1987 Hicks commissioned Alexandra Drysdale to paint NT 120801, a portrait of the sitter wearing a sunhat. Soon after the artist then painted NT 119672, to convey 'a melancholy aspect to Anthony’s personality' (information supplied by Alexandra Drysdale, 2024).’
