Summary
Dog grate, iron and steel, shaped front with shaped finials and the back embossed with cupids at a forge. Mid 18th century with older cast iron fireback inscribed 'Pax' and dated 1679. Reference to Peace Treaty of Nijmegen.
Provenance
Listed in 1958 auction catalogue for sale of contents of Beningbrough as "an antique shaped dog grate, the back embossed with cupids at a forge, and urn shaped finials 3ft 4in wide" (lot 633 - Saloon). Purchased by the Ministry of Works and transferred to National Trust along with the hall that year.
