Summary
Eight day longcase clock in walnut veneered case, signed Thomas Ogden, Halifax, c.1760 Four pillar movement with, brass cased lead weights, anchor escapement and rack hour striking on a bell. The striking work locks on a pin on the gathering wheel. The 12” brass, break-arch dial has mask and scroll spandrels, and a lunar calendar and rolling moon indication in the arch. The silvered brass chapter ring has roman numerals and arabic five minute figures with half hour markers and a quarter hour circle, and is signed: “Thos Ogden Halifax” at VI.. The matted dial centre has a seconds dial on silvered ring with Arabic ten second figures, above the centre, and below the centre a calendar aperture with engraved scrolling decoration and winding holes with blued steel collars. Pierced blued steel hands. The walnut veneered case has an oak carcass. The hood has a pagoda-style top surmounted by three brass ball and spire finials and has sound frets above the break-arch. The dial is flanked by brass-capped columns. Small break-arch top windows are on the sides of the hood. The hood and hood door are latched from inside the trunk. There is an ogee moulding below the hood and the trunk and base have cross-banded veneers, the shaped-top trunk door and the square panel to the plinth also having herringbone cross banding to the edges.
