Summary
A child's coat, in early 18th century style, part of child's fancy dress costume, c1900 London. Mid pink cotton warp cut pile velvet. Raised collar, front opening with 8 buttons and false corded buttonholes. Sleeves gathered into armhole and curved to gauntlet cuff with 3 buttons. Full skirted with vent (4 buttons missing). 2 pockets with flaps, the 3 buttons missing. The 14 gilt buttons with coronet and intial 'C' on the reverse side 'Firmin and Son Ltd., London'. Some wadding in skirt. Lined throughout with cream silk (twill weave diagonal ridge). Possibly worn by Viscount Clive, Percy Robert Herbert (1892-1916) Made by a professional Court Costumier. c1900.

Purchased by the National Trust from John George Herbert, 8th Earl of Powis and the Powis Estate Trustees in June 2010.
