Summary
Portrait miniature, watercolour on ivory, Margaret Maskelyne, Lady Clive (1735-1817) by John Smart (Norwich 1741 – London 1811), 1770 or 1778. An oval head and shoulders portrait miniature of a woman, turned to the right, head turned to the left, gazing to the left, wearing a yellow ermine-edged dress, turquoise jacket, and a pearl choker necklet. The sitter has grey eyes, light brown hair dressed high with pearls and a rosy complexion. Against a plain grey background, lit from the left. Monogram 'J.S.', and dated 1770.
Provenance
Accepted by HM Treasury on 21st March, 1963 in lieu of tax, placed on long term loan to the National Trust, then gifted to National Trust on 26th March 1991.
