Summary
Portrait miniature, watercolour on ivory, Robert Clive, 1st Baron Clive of Plassey 'Clive of India', KB, FRS, DCL, MP (1725-1774) (after Sir Nathaniel Dance-Holland RA ) by John Smart I (Norwich 1741 – London 1811). 1778. Oval. Head and shoulders portrait of a man turned slightly to the right, gazing at the spectator, in scarlet uniform with dark facings, white waistcoat with gilt buttons, white neckcloth. Grey eyes, powdered bag wig, ruddy face. Plain grey background lit from the left. This posthumous likeness is derived from Nathaniel Dance's full length portrait (P.33) that hangs in the Clive Museum. Monogram 'J.S.', and dated 1778.
Provenance
Accepted by HM Treasury on 21st March, 1963 in lieu of tax, placed on long term loan to the National Trust, then gifted to National Trust on 26th March 1991.
