Summary
Livery waistcoat to be worn by footmen/coachman, 1898. Scarlet wool (raised nap) foreparts with scarlet worsted (plain weave) reverse. Hand and machine sewn. Foreparts with false pockets trimmed with silver gilt braid along the front edge and pocket flaps. Fastened with hidden hooks and eyes at the front opening, on reverse an adjusting strap and buckle. 3 metal buttons (by Firmin and Son) bearing the Powis Coat of arms on each pocket flap. Lined in undyed bleached cotton (plain weave). Made for the 4th Earl who inherited in 1891.
Provenance
Waistcoat belonged to Footman Wright in 1898 before passing to Footman Welland. Purchased by the National Trust from the John George Herbert, 8th Earl of Powis and Powis Estate Trustees in March 2001.
