Summary
Parian and Carrara marble, Boy holding a Dove, Roman, 1st - 2nd century AD. Statue of a boy holding a dove in his right hand. probably a figure of Eros, the Parian marble face and torso Roman, 1st or 2nd century AD, the remainder, probably Carrara marble, 18th century. The dove is an attribute of Venus, the goddess of love and mother of Cupid (Eros), and symbolizes peace.
Provenance
According to an archive document this sculpture was purchased by Lord Clive on the Grand Tour after 1774 and was imported from Leghorn (Livorno, Tuscany) at the cost of 40 crowns. Accepted by HM Treasury on 21st March, 1963 in lieu of tax and conveyed to National Trust ownership on 29th November 1963.
