Summary
Marble, gilding and gilt bronze, Putto in the Guise of Minerva, Peter van den Branden (fl. Heidleberg c.1714 - 1720), circa 1700-20. A figure of a putto in the guise of Minerva, with helmet, spear and owl by the Dutch or Flemish sculptor Peter van den Branden. See also four marble putti representing the elements by the same artist. (NT 1181075.1-4). These figures relate to designs in red and black chalk in a Dutch private collection (ref. Gervase Jackson-Stops). An allegorical putto representing the arts and learning is signed and dated 'van den Branden 1717' (ex.coll. Sir Howard Hodgkin, Christie's, Paris, 15 June 2016, lot 30).
Provenance
Accepted by HM Treasury on 21st March, 1963 in lieu of tax and conveyed to National Trust ownership on 29th November 1963.
