Summary
Marble sculpture, A Boy holding a Dove, possibly Roman, 2nd century AD, with some restoration and re-cutting and 18th century (Old mark incorrect POW.SC.2). The dove, which the boy holds in his left hand and touches its beak with his left, is an attribute of Venus, the goddess of love and mother of Cupid (Eros), and symbolizes peace.
Provenance
Accepted by HM Treasury on 21st March, 1963 in lieu of tax and conveyed to National Trust ownership on 29th November 1963.
