Caption
William Herbert was the son of Sir Edward Herbert and Mary Stanley. His paternal grandparents were William Herbert, 1st Earl of Pembroke and Anne Parr, sister of Queen Catherine Parr. On 2 April 1629 he was created the 1st Lord Powis. In 1595 he married Lady Eleanor Percy, the teenage daughter of the 8th Earl of Northumberland, around the time that his portrait was painted. He held Powis Castle for King Charles I during the Civil War, but it was captured in 1644 and he was imprisoned and deprived of his estates.
Summary
Oil painting on canvas, Sir William Herbert, later 1st Lord Powis (1574-1656), British School, inscribed: WILLIAM HERBERT LORD POWYS / AETATIS 23 / 1595 / MOR 1656,1595. A three-quarter-length portrait of the son of Sir Edward Herbert, aged 23, he was created Lord Powis in 1629, in embroidered (chevron design) doublet and hose, his right hand on a table. Pendant to 1180904.
Provenance
Accepted by HM Treasury on 21st March, 1963 in lieu of tax and conveyed to National Trust ownership on 29th November 1963. Described located in the Gallery in 'The Account of the Official Progress of His Grace Henry, the First Duke of Beaufort through Wales in 1684' by Thomas Dineley p.69 '3 Wm Herbert Lord Powis'. Atat. 23. 1595 mort 1656'. Recorded at Powis Castle in Montgomery Collections Vol VI P.148 in 1873.
