Caption
This portrait depicts Lady Eleanor Percy, daughter of the 8th Earl of Northumberland, around the time of her marriage to Sir William Herbert, later 1st Lord Powis. To this day, Lady Eleanor’s Catholic book of hours and rosary, which previously belonged to Mary Queen of Scots, remain in the Powis collection.
Summary
Oil painting on canvas, Lady Eleanor Percy, later Lady Powis (1582/3-1650), aged 13, British School, inscribed: THE LADIE ELEANOR PERCY DAUGHTER/OF HENRY EARLE OF NOTHUMBERLAND/AETATIS 13/1595/MORT. 1651, 1595. A three-quarter-length portrait of the daughter of Henry Percy, 8th Earl of Northumberland, and wife of Sir William Herbert, afterwards Lord Powis, holding a fan, aged 13. She is wearing a brocade stomacher, full pink skirt,high lace ruff, a fan in her right hand; necklace and jewel in form of a cross, a jewel of Cupid pleading with Venus on her breast, and another apparently of St. George on her left sleeve. Variations of the Tudor rose are embroidered on her sleeves and bodice. Pendant to 1180905.
Provenance
Accepted by HM Treasury on 21st March, 1963 in lieu of tax and conveyed to National Trust ownership on 29th November 1963. Described located in the Gallery in 'The Account of the Official Progress of His Grace Henry, the First Duke of Beaufort through Wales in 1684' by Thomas Dineley p.69 '2 The Lady ELIANOR PERCY daughter of Henry Earle of Northumberland a piece of length superscribed Atat 13. 1595. mort 1657.' Recorded at Powis Castle in Montgomery Collections Vol VI P.148 in 1873.
