Summary
Portrait miniature, watercolour on ivory, Robert Clive, 1st Baron Clive of Plassey 'Clive of India', KB, FRS, DCL, MP (1725-1774) (after Sir Nathaniel Dance-Holland RA) by George Engleheart (Kew 1750 – Blackheath 1839). Oval. Head and shoulders portrait of a man, turned to the right, gazing at the spectator, in military uniform. Scarlet coat with dark reveals and silver frogging, white waistcoat with silver buttons, white neckcloth, powdered bag wig, ruddy face, aged about 45. Sky background, let from the left. Likeness derived from Nathaniel Dance's full length portrait (P.33). Old label attached on the reverse, with ink inscription 'Lord Clive'. Miniature in red leather case with white silk lining. Inscription on case reads 'DICKENSONS/114 NEW BOND STREET/LONDON'.
Provenance
Accepted by HM Treasury on 21st March, 1963 in lieu of tax and conveyed to National Trust ownership on 29th November 1963.
